What an IP address actually is
An IP address is a routing label, not an identity document. When you load a page, your request has to know where to come back to, so your internet provider assigns your connection a public address and every packet carries it. That is all it is: a return address. The reason it matters is that a return address is enough to infer a surprising amount of context.
There are two formats in circulation. IPv4 looks like 203.0.113.45 — four numbers,
about 4.3 billion possible addresses, and the world ran out of unallocated blocks years ago. IPv6 looks
like 2001:db8::8a2e:370:7334 and exists to solve that shortage. Most connections today speak both, which is why
the same device can appear under two different addresses depending on which protocol wins the race.
What your IP reveals — and what it does not
This is where most articles either exaggerate or hand-wave, so here is the honest split.

The practical takeaway: your IP is not a name tag, but it is a reputation tag. That distinction is the whole reason some connections sail through checkout pages and login screens while others get endless captchas.
Why sites block some addresses and trust others
Anti-fraud systems do not evaluate you, they evaluate the address. Three questions decide the outcome. Does the address belong to a consumer provider or a hosting company? Has it produced abusive traffic recently? And does its country match the rest of the session — browser language, timezone, payment details?
Addresses that live in data-centre ranges fail the first question by definition, which is why cheap datacenter proxies get blocked so quickly on sites that care. Addresses on real residential providers pass it, because they look like exactly what they are: a household connection. If your own address is currently carrying a bad reputation from something outside your control, that is the single most common cause of "why does this site keep challenging me".
The mismatch problem nobody mentions
Changing your visible country is only half the job. If your address says one country while your browser timezone, system language and card country say another, you have created a contradiction — and contradictions score worse than a plain unmasked connection. How to change your IP address
Ranked by how much they actually change:
- Restart your router. On a dynamic connection you may get a new address, but you stay on the same provider in the same city with the same reputation profile. Fine for shaking off an accidental block, useless for location.
- Mobile data or a different network. Genuinely different address and provider, still your own region.
- A VPN. Encrypts the tunnel and moves your exit country, but commercial VPN exit nodes sit in data centres, so many sites recognise and challenge them.
- A residential proxy. Routes you through a real consumer connection in your chosen country, so the address you present is indistinguishable in kind from an ordinary household line. This is what account work, ad checking and market research rely on.
